Ubuntu May Become A Rolling Release Distribution

Ubuntu Rolling

From version 14.04 LTS onwards, Ubuntu may turn into a rolling release cycle rather than the current six monthly release schedule.

On a Google+ Hangout, Leann Ogasawara, Canonical Kernel Team Manager mentioned that the option of moving to a rolling release system much like other OS’s like Arch and Windows had been “discussed”. During the hangout (shown below), Leann mentioned that this has been discussed. Roughly quoting, here is what she had to say about the whole thing:

The plan by 14.04 is to target what we’re calling a “rolling release and go from an LTS to LTS only” model,  eliminating the intermediate releases. We haven’t set anything in stone but it’s still on the cards as a possibility of happening when we hit the next LTS (14.04).

As you can see from the quote above, it certainly looks promising but there is still a lot of discussions to go before this is approved and officially announced – if at all. Here is the full Google+ Hangout for you to take a look at:

What this means for users…

In my opinion this can only be a positive thing. Many people, including myself regard the bi-yearly LTS (Long Term Support) releases as being stable, and all the releases that comes in between are nothing more than glorified beta’s. Having this new rolling release cycle will mean that users get a stable product that has the latest rolling updates for software and the Kernel.

In addition to this, the LTS releases will be more heavily developed and therefore a lot more stable as the development team will have two years between releases to develop the OS rather than the current six month cycles.

Conclusion

This is a tried and tested method of maintaining an OS that is proven to work. Arch do it, Windows do it and even Apple do it. I’m sure many people have been frustrated when a new, none LTS release of Ubuntu comes out and some things don’t work (ahem 11.04 and 12.10) . Hopefully with the new rolling release cycle these kinds of issues will be a thing of the past.

All in all (in my humble opinion), if this gets approved by the Ubuntu powers that be and they do in fact go to a rolling release cycle, then this can be nothing other than a positive move.

What do you guys think? Do you like this kind of cycle or do you prefer to have a “new toy” to play with every six months? Tell us your thoughts in the comments section…

I would love to see this happening. I love Arch because of that.
