The Locket Android App Pays You…For Advertising

Having a mobile phone contract is getting more and more expensive nowadays, gone are the days of a £10 a month, 1 year contracts. They’re mostly around £30+ and last for a whopping 2 years. This (I think) is because of the cost of the hardware rising significantly.

There is now an Android app on the market that claims to rid you of all these financial burdens in the way of adverts straight on the lock screen. The Locket Android app will actually pay you to display ads. But is it really worth it?

locket phoneLooking around the Locker website, it seems that signing up and installing the free Locket Android app is all you need to do in order to get “relevant adverts” on your lock screen. On their about page they go on to say:

We’re Locket. And we’re all about the lock screen. The way we see it, it’s the most valuable real estate in advertising. And we want to help people and brands make the most of this space, with a new model.

Rather than make you pay to get rid of ads, we make it so (relevant) brands pay you to display their ads. On average, you see around 5,000 ads every day. Brands already pay to show you ads. They just don’t pay you.

How much will I get?

The quick answer to that question is I don’t have a clue. I’ve been all around the Locket website but I can’t see a single break down on how much you actually get for your ads. However, on their FAQ page I did find this:

We use a proprietary algorithm that pays you based on how often you unlock your phone throughout the day, whether it be to view or ignore an ad. The people who use the app more often get paid more. The algorithm is also able to tell if you are swiping multiple times to try and take advantage of the system, and unfortunately that won’t increase the amount you are able to make.

If the image above is anything to go by with it’s 1 cent button at the bottom, I bet the amount will be pretty negligible. But I can’t comment as I’m not a user. Maybe someone who uses the Locket Android app can chime in here in the comments section and tell us?

Personally, I don’t want my personal phone to become another advertising revenue stream for companies to make money from me when I only see a fraction of that price. Yes it’s nice that we’re getting something back as consumers, but I would personally feel like a sell out. I can bet that the advertisers are getting more out of it that you are, otherwise what’s the point?

Would you use Locket? Maybe you think it’s the most innovative thing ever. Or, are you already using Locket and earning a nice little bonus to help with your phone bill? We would love to hear your thoughts on this interesting new app.
