Samsung Galaxy S3 To Get Jelly Bean

The Galaxy S3 is an excellent mobile phone, I actually have this phone myself, but having used Jelly Bean on my Nexus 7 tablet over the last month or so, I’m disappointed to see that the Galaxy S3 currently comes with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich as standard.

Well, my disappointment has been lifted. Yesterday it was announced on SamMobile that there is an official Jelly Bean test firmware for the Galaxy S3. Some of the new features found in the Jelly Bean update for the Galaxy S3 are:

- A new clock (in line with JB vanilla) in the notification bar.
- A function called “Dormant mode”
- Google Now is accessed by touching the Google Search widget
- A couple of new Live Wallpapers
- “Palm swipe” lets you take a screenshot
- Reboot into “safe mode” (maybe just in test release)

But it’s not all fun and games, in this development release there do seem to be some problems, SamMobile say:

We also had some troubles, for instance the internal SDCARD got formatted and some apps can’t be installed due to problems with smdl2tmp1.asec (which can’t be found at all). These problems could also be local to the specific device. A good suggestion is to make backup of everything prior flash.

But this is possibly the most important line in the whole of the article:

ADVICE of SamMobile is wait for 15 days to get the official updates by KIES or OTA!!!!

What this means is that by 31 August we should start to see updates rolling out to our Samsung Galaxy S3 devices, not only via Kies but over the air (OTA) also. In the past Samsung have been criticised for being extremely slow with their updates and also having to plug your device into Kies in order to update were so many other OEM’s do this OTA. To make things worse, there is no Linux version of Kies so I’ve always kept a virtual machine just for Kies.

I for one think this is great news and can’t wait for my update to Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean.
