Pinguy OS 13.04 Beta (Yet Stable) Released

The latest release of the ever popular Pinguy OS has been released. Pinguy OS 13.04 is loosely based on Ubuntu 13.04. However, this latest release has been consciously marked as a beta release by it’s developer Antoni Norman.

Pinguy 1304 DesktopWhat is Pinguy OS 13.04?

As mentioned in the introduction, Pinguy OS 13.04 is a linux distribution that is loosely based on the Ubuntu base build. The whole point of Pinguy OS 13.04 is to be a complete operating system right out the box that needs absolutely no tweaks whatsoever.

Pinguy OS 13.04 runs on Gnome 3.8.1 and includes a tonne of apps and system tweaks to get you up and running straight after installation. Think of it as an Ubuntu Gnome build +2 days of system tweaks and applications installations.

Why is Pinguy OS 13.04 a beta release?

Over on the Pinguy OS blog, Antoni has written an article that explains his rationale behind why he is releasing Pinguy OS 13.04 with a beta tag. In the article, Antoni goes on to explain:

I have decide to keep the 6 month releases as beta’s/snap shots of what the LTS will become. The 6 month release’s will be using bleeding edge software that hasn’t been fully tested. For an example the 13.04 release is using Gnome Shell 3.8.1. (something that isn’t included/supported in Ubuntu 13.04 by default).

So what does this all mean? Well, basically everything but the bi-annual LTS release of Pinguy OS will be marked as a beta release. It’s kind of like a happy medium between the rolling release cycles of distributions like Arch, and the six monthly cycle of many other distro’s like Ubuntu and Mint.

Pinguy OS 13.04 is a pretty hefty operating system, but with all the system tweaks that Antoni adds to the system, you won’t need a powerhouse to run it (I used to comfortably run Pinguy OS on my 2GB Intel Atom netbook). Pinguy OS 13.04 is also beautiful and very easy to get up and running on, not only that but their support forums are extremely helpful and friendly.

So if you’re on the look out for a stable, secure operating system that looks good and needs little or no tweaking straight out of the box, then I would highly recommend Pinguy OS 13.04 beta.
