Outlook.com Calendar Gets a Metro Look

Microsoft has begun rolling out a major Metro-style redesign for its Outlook.com calendar. The update arrives today, though some users won’t get it until later this week.

The new look calendar (shown below) is being touted by Microsoft as a no-nonsense online calendar that allows users to concentrate on managing their appointments instead of wasting time and focus on bling. Looking at the screenshot below of the new look Outlook.com calendar interface though, I can’t help but think that it looks a lot like how my Google calendar has done for quite some time now.

“The new, modern design of Outlook.com, along with many of Microsoft’s other products, optimizes “content over chrome,” which, in the case of calendar, means your events and appointments are the primary focus.”

The new look Outlook.com calendar does look nice and clean, and I can’t help but think that Microsoft have taken a leaf out of the book of Google’s new simple UI design that they pushed to their web apps way over a year ago now. I have an Outlook.com account (although I personally don’t use it), but my calendar hasn’t been updated yet, I have to say, the new look is a vast improvement over the old dated look (shown below).

What do you guys think? Are Microsoft going in the right direction with their online apps, or should they give up the ghost in a market that’s dominated by Google? Tell us what you think in the comments section below…
