New Beta release of Apex Launcher brings Jelly Bean goodness over to ICS

apex

Apex Launcher. Known to be one of the most popular 3rd party launchers for Android (along with its alternative being NOVA Launcher), recently had its code based off of the launcher in Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. This new Beta release (version 1.3.0, beta 2) brings a lot of new visual and performance improvements that give users who are still running ICS some of the features Jelly Bean brings to the home screen, along with the great amount of customizability the current Apex Launcher is known for. Users who are already running Jelly Bean can still use this as it brings a lot of features compared to the Stock launcher.

Here is a list of things new in the Beta release:

  • When placing widgets on the screen, everything else automatically moves to make room
  • When they are too big, widgets resize on their own to fit on the homescreen
  • Quickly remove apps/widgets by flinging them to the edge of the homescreen
  • Major performance boost for homescreen and drawer
  • New app enter/exit animations (JB only)
  • Switched to phone layout on 7″ tablets (e.g., Nexus 7)
  • Added background for widgets in the drawer
  • Fixed icon ordering bug within folders

Including these improvements and bugfixes:

  • Unlimited drawer tabs and new drawer management UI (pro)
  • Improved drawer tab switching for vertical drawers (pro)
  • Fixed Play Store widgets on JellyBean
  • Fixed paid theme (icon pack) issue on JellyBean
  • Lots of other improvements and enhancements
  • Updated translations

If you want to give this release a try, you can download the current version of Apex Launcher in the Play Store and select Apex Settings → About Apex Launcher → Automatically check for updates (switch to Beta version) → Check update now. This will update the launcher to 1.3.0 beta2 so you can enjoy the improvements listed above.

An APK is also available if you would like to directly install this version here.
