How to Upgrade from Ubuntu 12.04 to 12.10

Ok, so you’re a long term Ubuntu user that normally upgrades to new versions rather than going through the hassle of a re-install. On previous releases you get the option within your update manager to upgrade to the latest version on the OS that we all know and love.

However, this time around in Ubuntu 12.04 there doesn’t seem to be an alert within the update manager informing you that Ubuntu 12.10 has been released and therefore not giving you the option to upgrade.

Ubuntu fans rejoice! This article will show you how to get that alert back so you can upgrade to Ubuntu 12.10 Quantal Quetzal.

First of all open up your update manager (search in the Dah for “Update”) and hit the ‘Settings’ button at the bottom left of the window.

Once you have the Update Manager settings window open, click on the ‘Updates’ tab and change the ‘Notify me of a new Ubuntu version’ drop down menu to ‘For any version’.

You will then be asked to enter your account password to approve the change. Click the ‘Close’ button on the Update manager settings windows to return to the Update Manager. Click ‘Check’ and Ubuntu will then check for new updates that are available – hey presto, the option to upgrade to Ubuntu 12.10 is available.

Here is a sneaky peak at my Ubuntu 12.10 desktop (review coming very soon)…
