Happy Fifth Birthday Android!

Today marks the 5th anniversary of Androids début to the world. Way back in 2007 Apple announced that it was taking the mobile market by storm with the release of the iPhone. Over a year later Google vowed to knock Apple from their smartphone perch and my god have they done that.

Android has come such a long way in the 5 short years of it’s life that it’s turned into what is (in my humble opinion) the best smartphone operating system that exists today. A report from the IDC a few days ago showed that Android now exists on over 75% of the worlds smartphones in the last quarter. Pretty impressive I think you will agree.

How did it all begin?

Below is a video showing the announcement of Android. As you can see, it’s a far cry from the version of Jelly Bean that runs on my Nexus 7! It’s hard to believe that this was only 5 years ago.

This is just the beginning

Android is only just starting to get the momentum that it deserves. Until now the sales of Android based Tablets has been sketchy to say the least but with releases of fantastic products like the Nexus series, Android can only get stronger.

Android is Open Source which means that anyone can have the source code and do pretty much what they like with it. This means that many manufacturers like Samsung, HTC, Sony and many more have adopted Android as their main OS. This means that Android is far more vast than any proprietary OS is ever likely to be and maybe more importantly, it means that Android users have more hardware to choose from.

Personally I can’t wait to see what the next 5 years will bring in the life of Android. What about you guys? Do you love your Android devices or are you more of an iOS person? Why not tell us your thoughts in the comments section. Or, better yet, come and say hi on our forums and discuss your thoughts there – we’d love to hear from you!
