Google Drive Comes To Ubuntu – Kind Off

Personally, I don’t use Google Drive. Mainly because I’m predominantly a Linux user and as of yet there is no Google Drive support for Linux. I did used to use Google Docs but switched to Ubuntu One when my internet went offline for 10 days once and I have absolutely no access to any of my files.

Anyway, I digress…

Yesterday saw the release of a new application in Ubuntu called ‘GWOffice‘ (Google Web Office). It’s basically a front end application for Google Drive. So I thought I would install it on my machine and take it for a spin. After installation I tested the ‘drag to upload’ feature – I dragged a document onto the Launcher icon and I was prompted for my Google details again (I’d just entered them to open up GWOffice). My document was then uploaded but the the application crashed when I tried to re-sync it in order to open my file – not good so far.

I then restarted GWOffice and tried again. This time it worked and I was able to open the document. However, I was first presented with the Google Drive logon screen from the internet – this really broke the fluidity of GWDocs for me and made me think “I could just use my browser for this” thus kind of defeating the whole object of the application. Finally, once the document was open, the whole screen began to flicker – this only happened when a document was open. If I flipped back the GWOffice home screen then the flickering stopped.

All in all, my brief experience with GWOffice wasn’t very pleasurable BUT (and it’s a big but) – GWOffice is still under development, this isn’t considered to be a stable release AND I was running Ubuntu in a VM so this may have something to do with the problems I’ve been having. GWOffice certainly won’t be tempting me away from Ubuntu One any time soon but it’s a good start for us Linux users – provided these problems are resolved in time for the stable release.

If you want to try GWOffice youself (Ubuntu 12.04 and above only), then run the following terminal commands:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:tombeckmann/ppa  sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install gwoffice

Have you tried GWOffice? Am I being to harsh? Let us know what you think in the comments section…
