Elementary OS Luna Beta 2 Released

ElementaryJust a few hours ago the release of Elementary OS Luna beta 2 was announced on the official Elementary Journal. But what does that mean for us users, and is it finally ready?

It’s ready when it’s ready…

The guys over at Elementary HQ are notorious for not restricting themselves to any kind of release cycle. Opting instead for a “ready when it’s ready” approach. This means that they don’t have a mad panic 1 day before their release date and it gives them the time they need to add all the features they want to add prior to release.

Not only this, but it means that the Elementary team don’t need to keep letting their users down by delaying launch. As with the recent, well documented Fedora and Mageia delays.

So is it ready?

Well that’s a matter of opinion. Being Elementary, it is of course beautiful, quick, and simple to use. But if you were to ask the developers then they would of course say it isn’t ready as it’s a beta release. However, if you were to ask me, I would have no problems using Luna as my main OS as it stands now. I’ve been running it in a virtual machine with just 1GB of RAM and the performance is excellent.

However, that doesn’t mean that Luna isn’t without it’s problems. There is the odd crash here and there, but as I said, performance is excellent and it does look gorgeous. If you want a full run down of what’s new in Elementary OS Luna Beta 2, then head on over to the Elementary announcement for more information. WARNING: Although Elementary OS Luna Beta 2 works great and looks awesome, this is still a development release and should therefore be treated as such. Neither RefuGeeks or the Elementary team can be held responsible for any damage or data loss that may (but probably won’t) occur from using this development release.

Looks really nice. I tried it on a USB stick and it had a bug in which the keyboard acted as if the function key were constantly being pushed. (found a filed bug and commented). It’s super polished but some of thoe good looking apps are pretty limited — calendar, Geary

I have to wonder how these developers can keep up, though, with the pace of desktop Linux, which is adding features at a pretty steady clip. And this is based on Ubuntu 12.04… By the time they hit final release, we will be less than a year away from a new LTS.

It’s hard not to imagine that even when they do hit final release, they might be a bit behind other major distros. They should consider a schedule like Bodhi that will release benchmarks based on LTS Ubuntu and backport latest kernels and software versions via an independent repository. That way they can have an easier development pace but still make sure users get the latest software, like LibreOffice 4, for example.

Maybe the best Linux OS experience, it remains a lot of work to become a big challenger to Windows or Mac OS X… I like Luna
