CISPA Is Back! Help Protect Internet Privacy With Your WordPres Site

A while back, the American CISPA bill was successfully fought by the Internet Defence League (IDL), but unfortunately CISPA is back with a vengeance. So the Internet Defence League need the support of as many people as possible. In this article we’re going to show you website owners a quick and easy way to help fight CISPA.

What is CISPA?

CISPA is essentially a bill that gives federal agencies access too any of your personal data and online communications without a warrant. Thereby pretty much eradicating online privacy completely. There are a number of companies that are backing CISPA including AT&T, Facebook & Microsoft to name but a few. The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) has gone on to outline some of the more questionable provisions included in CISPA:

  • Eviscerating existing privacy laws by giving overly broad legal immunity to companies who share users’ private information, including the content of communications, with the government.
  • Authorizing companies to disclose users’ data directly to the NSA, a military agency that operates secretly and without public accountability.
  • Broad definitions that allow users’ sensitive personal information to be used for a range of purposes, including for “national security,” not just computer and network security.

Doesn’t make for very good reading does it!

What can we do about it?

The best way to fight CISPA is to support the Internet Defence League and doing this couldn’t be easier – especially if you own a WordPress site. All you need to do is install the Cat Signal Internet Defence League plugin and choose whether you want the banner or the popup to display when the IDL are running a campaign. Some may think that CISPA only affects users in America. This couldn’t be further from the truth. The internet, as we all know is a worldwide network so how long do you think it will take for other government bodies to jump on the CISPA bandwagon should this get passed? Personally I value my privacy so RefuGeeks wholeheartedly supports the Internet Defence League.

All the plugin does is add some simple javascript to your website that will allow readers to support the IDL whenever a campaign is running. Once you have signed up your website to support the IDL, you can also add a selection of sidebar and footer widgets to show you want to fight CISPA even when a campaign isn’t running.

RefuGeeks has joined the ranks as a proud member of the Internet Defence League along with other members such as WordPress, PHP & Reddit. If you run a website we urge you to sign up also. The more websites we get signing up to the IDL, the more chance we have of fighting this ridiculous bill.

THANK YOU!

    What is CISPA?
CISPA is essentially a bill that gives federal agencies access -TOO?-
any of your personal data and online communications without a warrant.
    Also:
The internet, as we all know is a worldwide network so how long do you
think it will take for other government bodies to jump on the CISPA
bandwagon should this get passed? – This needs some editing. Perhaps another comma after “as we all know”? And break it into two sentences: “The internet, as we all know, is a worldwide network. How long do you think…”?
