Amazon Offer Low Cost Cloud Storage

Amazon have launched a new extremely cheap cloud storage service called Glacier - and when I say cheap, I mean cheap! At a costs starting from as little as $0.01 per GB per month, this means you can have 1TB for just $10.00 per month. Cheap or what!

But before you go off and start cancelling your Dropbox accounts, there is something you should know. Glacier isn’t a cloud syncing and backup service like Dropbox – it’s designed to be a tool for off-site, long term cloud archival of data and backups. Here is what the small print says:

Glacier is designed with the expectation that retrievals are infrequent and unusual, and data will be stored for extended periods of time. You can retrieve up to 5% of your average monthly storage (pro-rated daily) for free each month. If you choose to retrieve more than this amount of data in a month, you are charged a retrieval fee starting at $0.01 per gigabyte. Learn more. In addition, there is a pro-rated charge of $0.03 per gigabyte for items deleted prior to 90 days.Learn more.

So what this means is that you will be charged if you delete anything that is less than 90 days old and you can only retrieve 5% of your data on a monthly basis for free, at which point you will be charged at the same rate as you are charged for storing the data in the first place.

Too me, this isn’t a huge issue. Let me explain…

If Glacier is used for it’s intended purposes then you will be using it for long term archival of data & backups. So, you will only really be using it to restore the odd file/folder that you may need to pull out of archives. In a disaster recovery (DR) situation then you would rely on your more up to date, on-site backups.

However, if your building was to burn down and all your backups with it (god forbid) then, based on the 1TB example I mentioned before, it would only cost you $10.00 to get all of your data back anyway.

I think this is a no brainer for anyone who requires off site backups of important data. Personally, I think my backup regime has me covered so I won’t be using Glacier – however, I think a lot of businesses will. What do you think?
